Event Details

<2046> is one of Wong Kar-wai's classic films. The story is set in a not-so-distant future, where writer Chow Mo-wan retreats to room 2046 of a hotel in Hong Kong, encounters mysterious women, and writes a science fiction story about a place called 2046 – a domain where people go to recover lost memories. As the line between reality and fiction blurs, the film becomes a meditation on love, loss, and the possibilities of return in a constantly changing world. The philosophical reflections on time in "2046" resonate with the EAST2046's imagination of future culture. We also hope to explore how the themes of future aesthetics and dislocation resonate with the experiences of contemporary Asian diaspora through this screening.

Wong Kar-wai (born 17 July 1958) is one of the most influential contemporary film directors and screenwriters in Hong Kong. His works are known for their rich visual style, lyrical rhythm, and profound portrayal of urban loneliness. Notable films include 'Chungking Express' (1994), 'Fallen Angels' (1995), 'In the Mood for Love' (2000), 'Happy Together' (1997), and '2046' (2004). 'In the Mood for Love' won the Best Actor and Best Cinematography awards at the Cannes Film Festival. Wong Kar-wai excels in using fragmented narratives, dappled colours, and Eileen Chang-style prose to construct emotional mazes through the passage of time, allowing audiences to experience the entanglement of memory and desire as light and music intertwine. His visual aesthetics have had a profound influence on the global film industry, earning him the title of 'the poet of emotional cinema.'
